So its nearing the
end of May, in full bloom spring in Sweden. Yeah, we now have no more snow; all melted, still single figure temperatures most days, sun shines a few hours…a
week. But overall things are looking up weather wise, flowers are out, tree’s
are budding, people are sneezing. Yeay, its summer time on its way.

Since the last
entry, things have changed a bit. I have turned a year older and almost
completed my thesis. Both have been something I don’t really want to enthuse
about. But life has to keep going on.
My birthday itself
cannot be ignored, Sweden seems to think it’s a great time to party, so the
whole country has this huge fest called Valborgsmässoafton (Walpurgis in
English I think). It’s a great excuse to make a HUGE fire, drink too much, eat
to much and have a great time out. (It also has traditional links to burning
witches, burning winter away; welcoming spring and also it’s the kings
birthday).

Fire...mmmm |
The best place to
celebrate this event is Uppsala, which happens to be a city that one of my good
friends family is from. So 5 of us piled into a car, travelled down to meet the
family, eat some good food, chill out in their stuga (summerhouse) and just
chill. The weather was perfect for that weekend, between 15-16 degree’s, sunshine,
no wind. We ate super food, made blueberry pancakes on the murrikka (skottel
for SA speakers), enjoyed a HUGE fire and fireworks…and had a chance to get
sick on the carousel on some stupid playground ride. All in all, a good weekend
out.

The weather has
been a topic many people have been talking about. We have gone from days of
warm sunshine, to snowing and terrible weather. Just a few pics: they speak
louder than words.
Another cool event
was a köslappet (Cow release). In Sweden they keep the cows in a barn the whole
winter, then in spring they release the cows to the fields. These animals go
crazy when they come out, jumping, bouncing, head butting each other, rolling
in the grass and mooing with all their cow abilities can moo with. No day in
Swedish countryside can be without norrland hospitality, many fika’s and meal
times. All in all; a great day out.

So as the last few
weeks wrap up in may, some changes are bound to happen. My thesis should
hopefully come to a close, 22 hour long sunshine should start soon, fishing,
moving apartments and hopefully finding a job. Till new updates I continually
long for freedom and the warm earth of Africa.
